The General Library of the Custody of the Holy Land in Jerusalem conserves about a hundred printed volumes from the XV century. Though few in number, it is nevertheless an extremely interesting collection in the context of the Holy Land. This collection, which contains mainly books on religious topics, is a good example of contemporaneous European books. This exhibition on the 8th to 10th November 2016 includes a sample of 26 volumes from this collection; whilst the complete catalogue of the XV and XVI century collection, edited by Luca Rivali is forthcoming in 2017.
The exhibits testify, on the one hand, to the variety of books printed in the first century of typography; and on the other, the story of each individual book. Some books arrived in the Middle East several centuries ago and became part of the Custody’s patrimony: from Rhodes or Cairo, Cyprus or Nazareth, from Beirut or Bethlehem. Other books came from antiquaries acquired by the Commissariat of the Holy Land in Washington (USA), that have been transferred to Jerusalem recently.
Accompanying the exhibition is a catalogue rich in pictures and edited in English and Italian. The catalogue, written by Luca Rivali and Lorenzo Salamone, has a foreword by Falk Eisermann, director of the Gersamtkatalog der Wiegendruck of Berlin. This catalogue is published thanks to the contribution of ATS Associazione Pro Terra Sancta. To understand the difficulties of cataloguing and preserving ancient books, there will be an international colloquium on the 9th November.
The event, desired by the Custos of the Holy Land Fr. Francesco Patton and by the Director of the Library Fr. Lionel Goh, is the result of the initiative of the Libri ponti di pace / Books bridges of peace project, which aims to promote the ancient and precious material of the Franciscan Libraries of the Holy Land. The project is directed by the European Research Centre for Book Publishing and Library (CRELEB) of the Catholic University of Milan and is sponsored by private benefactors, ATS and the Custody of the Holy Land.
Entrance to the exhibition is free. Explanations in Italian, English and French will be available.

La Biblioteca Generale della Custodia di Terra Santa a Gerusalemme conserva un centinaio di edizioni a stampa del XV secolo. Un piccolo numero, se si vuole, ma estremamente interessante per il contesto geografico in cui si trovano. Tale nucleo librario, composto soprattutto da testi di argomento religioso, costituisce però un bello specimen della produzione tipografica europea del XV secolo. Mentre si attende per il 2017 la pubblicazione di un catalogo complessivo delle edizioni Quattro e Cinquecentesche curato da Luca Rivali, nei giorni 8-10 novembre 2016 si potrà ammirare una selezione di 26 volumi tratti da tale raccolta.
I libri sono stati scelti per documentare da una parte la varietà dei libri andati a stampa nel primo secolo della tipografia, dall’altra le storie di questi libri. In effetti una parte dei volumi sono giunti in Medio Oriente già in anni lontani, divenendo parte del patrimonio della Custodia un po’ in tutta la sua estensione geografica, da Rodi al Cairo, da Cipro a Nazareth, da Beirut a Betlemme. Altri, invece, provengono dal mercato antiquario e sono giunti a Gerusalemme in anni recenti dai Francescani di Washington.
Della mostra è stato anche allestito un catalogo, ricco di illustrazioni e redatto in italiano e inglese. Il catalogo, scritto da Luca Rivali e Lorenzo Salamone, ha una premessa di Falk Eisermann, direttore del Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke di Berlino, ed è stato pubblicato grazie al contributo di ATS, Associazione pro Terra Sancta. Per approfondire alcune tematiche legate alla catalogazione e alla conservazione del patrimonio librario antico è stato anche organizzato per il 9 novembre un colloquio internazionale.
Questo evento, nato su sollecitazione del Padre Custode di Terra Santa fra Francesco Patton e del Padre Bibliotecario p. Lionel Goh, rientra tra le iniziative del progetto “Libri ponti di pace” che da anni punta alla valorizzazione del patrimonio antico e prezioso delle biblioteche francescane di Terra Santa. Il progetto, gestito dal Centro di Ricerca Europeo Libro Editoria Biblioteca (CRELEB) dell’Università Cattolica di Milano, è sostenuto da sponsor privati, ATS, Custodia di Terra Santa.
L’ingresso alla mostra è libero. Saranno disponibili visite guidate in italiano, inglese e francese.
