The news report too often on the devastation of world cultural heritage: natural disasters, negligence, plundering, acts of war that lead to the loss of artistic works, archaeological sites, books and archives.
From this perspective, libraries and collections need to elaborate strategies for the preservation of its most valuable materials, not only considering actual restoration work on books and manuscripts, but firstly by knowing the amount and nature of the patrimony and assets.
The international colloquium “Catalogare per preservare e conoscere. Un itinerario internazionale fra i libri antichi di Gerusalemme / Cataloging for preservation and knowledge. An international itinerary through the ancient books of Jerusalem” aims to investigate this topic in the unique context of the Holy City.
It is the first colloquium among the different cultural communities of Jerusalem (i.e. the Jewish, the Palestinian, the Armenian and the Catholic communities) to meet and discuss different aspects of cataloguing manuscripts, ancient books and documents. It will be the first opportunity to know each other and to share the various experiences of the different cultural institutions. Hence the cultural importance of an initiative of this nature.
The event is the result of the cooperation between the Catholic University of Milan and the Custody of the Holy Land. Since 2010, the project Libri ponti di pace / Books bridges of peace promotes a series of initiatives that has currently brought to Jerusalem some 30 students or recent graduates, on long or short term basis, to evaluate the ancient and precious material preserved by the Franciscans.
The meeting will be held (in English) on the 9th November in the afternoon during which a three-day exhibition dedicated to the fifteenth-century printed books of the Custody of the Holy Land will take place.
The conference will host as key-speaker Luisa López-Vidriero Abelló, director of the prestigious Real Biblioteca of Madrid, who will deliver the talk The knowledge of the book and the prospects of its valorization.

Le cronache dei giornali riportano purtroppo spesso notizie sulla distruzione del patrimonio culturale mondiale: catastrofi naturali, incuria, furti, atti di guerra possono causare la perdita di opere d’arte, siti archeologici, libri e documenti. In quest’ottica, le biblioteche e le raccolte librarie devono mettere in atto forme di conservazione del loro patrimonio più prezioso. Prima ancora però di parlare di interventi materiali su libri e manoscritti (come il restauro), quei libri bisogna conoscerli e sapere che ci sono e cosa contengono. Il colloquio internazionale “Catalogare per preservare e conoscere. Un itinerario internazionale fra i libri antichi di Gerusalemme / Cataloging for preservation and knowledge. An international itinerary through the ancient books of Jerusalem” intende sviluppare tale idea nel particolare contesto della Città Santa.
Si tratta di un primo incontro tra diverse realtà culturali presenti in città (mondo ebraico, palestinese, armeno e cattolico) per parlare dei vari aspetti della catalogazione di manoscritti, libri antichi, documenti. Sarà una prima occasione per conoscersi e conoscere cosa si sta facendo in proposito nelle diverse istituzioni culturali: un momento quindi di dialogo e condivisione tra personalità interessate a costruire momenti di comprensione e ascolto tra alcune delle molte identità presenti a Gerusalemme. Allora si intende l’importante valore culturale di tale iniziativa.
L’evento peraltro si pone in continuità coi progetti che dal 2010 l’Università Cattolica di Milano ha sviluppato presso la Custodia di Terra Santa col titolo di Libri ponti di pace / Books bridges of peace. Si tratta di una serie di iniziative che hanno portato a Gerusalemme circa 30 studenti universitari o neolaureati per periodi più o meno estesi destinati a valorizzare il patrimonio librario più antico e prezioso conservato in loco dai Francescani.
L’incontro, interamente in inglese e programmato per il pomeriggio del 9 novembre prossimo (nell’ambito di una tre-giorni dedicata a una mostra sui libri del XV secolo posseduti dalla Biblioteca della Custodia di Terra Santa), vedrà la presenza, come relatrice principale, di Luisa López-Vidriero Abelló, direttrice della prestigiosa Real Biblioteca di Madrid, che parlerà del tema The knowledge of the book and the prospects of its valorization.
